With the rise of AI and automation, it’s only a matter of time before technology disrupts the tattoo industry too. However, should we really let technology ruin a long tradition that involves such a personal and artistic touch? While automated tattoo machines might seem like a futuristic and efficient option, there are compelling reasons to reconsider getting tattooed by an AI machine.

“Enter as a Stranger, Leave as a Friend” hand painted sign

#1 The personal connection between the artist and the client is a crucial aspect of the tattooing experience. Choosing an image, discussing design elements, and sharing stories during the sessions create a unique bond. Automated machines lack the ability to engage in these conversations, eliminating the personal touch that makes each tattoo special. The human touch brings out the emotional and artistic aspects of the process, turning it into more than just a transaction.

That’s why many shops have a “come as a stranger, leave as friends” motto.

Man getting tattoo looks in pain

#2 Pain tolerance varies from person to person, and a skilled tattoo artist can gauge your comfort level during the session. They adjust their technique based on your reactions and feedback. An automated machine, however advanced, cannot discern subtle signs of discomfort or increased pain. This lack of sensitivity can result in a less-than-pleasant experience for the client, potentially affecting the overall satisfaction with the tattoo.

Glitch Style Skull Tattoo

#3 Technology is not perfect. Machines can malfunction, and software glitches can occur. Imagine the horror of getting a tattoo only to realize that the machine made an error, permanently imprinting the wrong design on your skin? Unlike a human artist who can adapt and correct mistakes, a machine lacks the intuition and creativity to rectify such errors. The permanence of tattoos demands precision that machines may not reliably provide. Unless you are looking for a “glitch tattoo”, but I still would go to a real artist.

Bad temporary tattoo of Justin Biebers face

#4 Human bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and tattooing is an art that should adapt to these variations. A skilled artist understands how to manipulate the design to complement the unique contours of an individual’s body. Automated machines, on the other hand, operate on set parameters and may struggle to adapt to the intricacies of different body shapes. The result could be a tattoo that looks out of place or doesn’t flow with the natural lines of the body. Who wants their real tattoo to look like a temporary sticker tattoo?

In conclusion, while technology continues to advance, some traditions are best preserved with the human touch. Tattooing is not just about the end result; it’s about the journey, the connection, and the artistry. Trusting an automated machine with something as personal as a tattoo may strip away the essence of this ancient art form, leaving behind a soulless, mass-produced impression on your skin. I think we should keep paying real artist for real work! But what do you think?
